Over 1,900 child abuse cases reported in Pak in first half of 2026: Politician

Islamabad, Pakistan witnessed over 1,900 reported cases of child abuse and violence in the first half of 2026, according to Pakistan Peoples Party Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman. The senator expressed deep concern over the disturbing trend, stating that "no impunity can be tolerated for those who prey on children". Rehman highlighted that 80% of the cases were from Punjab province, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing child protection mechanisms.

A significant 57% of the reported cases came from urban areas, while the remaining 43% were from rural regions. Shockingly, 43% of the accused were known to the victims, and nearly 45% of incidents occurred within their own homes, a place traditionally considered the first line of protection for children. Rehman urged for a coordinated response, emphasizing the need for vigilance, adequate safeguards, and effective justice systems within families and communities.

She also called for more reporting by citizens and expedited trials for serious crimes against children, emphasizing that protecting children is a shared responsibility of the state and society.
