Ortom explains reasons for lending Peter Obi his vehicle for Benue visit

Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom has clarified his decision to lend his vehicle to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi during his recent trip to the state. Ortom, through his media aide Terver Akase, explained that the act was an expression of courtesy, rather than a political endorsement of Obi. The explanation came in response to accusations from the Benue State Government that Ortom had aided Obi's visit, sparking debate about his political positions ahead of the 2027 election.

The controversy arose after Obi encountered difficulties reaching the Yelewata region to pay respects to victims of a deadly attack, which prevented him from completing his planned itinerary. Benue State's Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, alleged that Ortom was directly involved in facilitating Obi's movement, citing a Toyota Land Cruiser registered in his name.

However, Ortom dismissed these claims, stating that lending his vehicle did not equate to a political alliance or a shift in his support for Tinubu. Ortom emphasized that the gesture was a matter of basic courtesy, especially given Obi's status as a presidential candidate and former governor. He described attempts to politicize the act as "ridiculous and shameful" and accused the Alia administration of attempting to turn a humanitarian act into a political controversy.

Ortom affirmed his current support for Tinubu for the 2027 election but maintained that his decision to assist Obi was separate from his political allegiance.
