OpenAI IPO won't happen this year, says Sam Altman

The creator of the text-robot ChatGPT, OpenAI, has announced a delay in its planned initial public offering (IPO). This was revealed by CEO Sam Altman in an interview with the magazine "Fortune" on Saturday. Altman cited the current debate surrounding the dangers of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the reason for the postponement. "It would be unwise to go public right now," he stated.

When asked if he would consider a 2026 IPO, Altman responded, "I would say, not 2026. We have a lot more work to do." He also mentioned the collaboration with governmental bodies, which would become more complex for a publicly traded company. "Given the current challenges regarding security and the alignment of AI with human values, as well as the need for collaboration between the industry and governments, I am glad to continue as a private company," Altman added.

These statements come following an intensified debate over AI doomsday scenarios in recent days. Earlier in the week, a leading researcher from the competitor Anthropic had resigned and issued a warning about the capabilities of the technology.
