Nigerian bishop, one other killed in South Africa

Two Nigerians, Bishop Michael Fakunle and James Nwankwo, were killed in Johannesburg, South Africa, in separate incidents on September 4 and September 5 respectively. The deaths have sparked concerns over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in the country. Fakunle's murder was reportedly carried out by unknown individuals at his home after he received a series of threats.

Nwankwo's death occurred on September 5 due to what was described as 'gruesome interrogation techniques' by the South African police. Former Minister of Aviation and ambassador-designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, announced the killings in a statement on his social media platform. He expressed shock over the murders and alleged that Fakunle and Nwankwo were among the victims of a disturbing pattern of violence against Nigerians in South Africa.

Fani-Kayode called for action from the South African government to protect Nigerians and bring those responsible for the killings to justice. He also criticized South African non-governmental organizations for issuing deadlines for African nationals to leave the country, accusing them of threatening the lives of those who did not comply.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa and the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg condemned the killing of Fakunle, stating that two suspects allegedly entered his residence and opened fire, shooting him multiple times. They have reported the incident to the relevant authorities.
