Network operators deploy 8,526 of 12,179 committed network sites – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealed that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have successfully installed 8,526 of the 12,179 additional network coverage and capacity sites they had committed to providing across Nigeria. This information was shared during the NCC's 110th Board meeting held on September 9, 2026. The 8,526 sites represent around 70% of the operators' commitments to increase network coverage, capacity, and service quality.

The NCC noted that this is a significant improvement from the approximately 5,000 sites reported in their previous board meeting. However, the commission expressed concern over the impact of fibre cuts, which contributed to a significant increase in network disruptions in June. The NCC emphasized the importance of matching infrastructure expansion with stronger protection of critical communications infrastructure to improve network resilience and service reliability.

The agency also announced the launch of its Device Management System (DMS), which will support enhanced compliance with type approval requirements and improve the ability to verify device compliance, discourage the circulation of non-compliant devices, and deter mobile device theft. Additionally, the Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) is set to go live in October 2026, which will strengthen the governance of telecommunications identities and reduce risks associated with identity misuse, reassignment, and recycling.

The NCC reviewed progress towards developing a framework for zero-rating educational platforms and content in Nigeria, which was officially launched on September 10 with a scheduled go-live date of October 1, 2026. The initiative aims to promote digital inclusion and improve students' access to educational resources. The Board also discussed recommendations for the strategic repositioning of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) and expressed concern over the resurgence of call masking activities in the telecommunications industry, describing it as unacceptable and a serious regulatory concern.

The NCC reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on call masking and pledged to collaborate with security and law-enforcement agencies to identify, prevent, and eliminate such activities.
