Namma Chennai app opens volunteer registration ahead of Northeast monsoon

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated volunteer registration through its enhanced Namma Chennai mobile app in anticipation of the impending Northeast monsoon, as directed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. This program seeks to engage members of the public, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), resident associations, and other entities in collaboration with both the government and the GCC during emergencies and relief operations.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran explained that the system will facilitate the coordination of volunteers' services and their deployment based on their desired areas of involvement. Interested individuals can register via the Namma Chennai application or the Corporation website. New users need to create an account using their name, mobile number, email address, address, and PIN code, then log in through an OTP.

Once logged in, users can select the 'Volunteer Registration' option and register as an individual, a corporate entity, or an NGO/association. Applicants must provide information about prior disaster experiences, upload an identity document, include emergency contact details, and specify their area of expertise.

Volunteers can also indicate their preferred zone or opt for 'Any Area in Chennai' if they are willing to assist anywhere within the Corporation's boundaries. All comments must be written in English, using full sentences, and cannot be abusive or personal; they must adhere to the community guidelines. The corporation has transitioned to a new commenting platform.

Existing registered users of The Hindu and logged-in users may continue their engagement with the articles. New users can register and log in to post comments; older comments can be accessed by logging into their accounts on Vuukle.
