N. Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles toward East Sea: JCS

North Korea conducted a series of missile launches toward the East Sea on Saturday morning, according to South Korea's military. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported the detection of multiple ballistic missiles launched from the Wonsan area at approximately 5:20 a.m. The JCS did not offer additional information about the details of the launches.

In response to the recent missile tests, South Korea has increased its surveillance efforts to monitor for any further missile launches and maintains a state of full alert. The military is also sharing relevant information with the United States and Japan. The missile launches occurred shortly after the conclusion of a trilateral military exercise involving South Korea, the United States, and Japan, known as the Freedom Edge exercise.

This exercise took place in international waters to the east and south of South Korea's southern island of Jeju. The drills proceeded as scheduled despite South Korea and the United States scaling back their joint Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise last month following an order from then-U.S. President Donald Trump. The JCS noted that the missile launches came in an apparent conciliatory gesture toward Pyongyang, indicating a possible attempt to de-escalate tensions.
