Mechanic Susie helps turn jockey standings around

Two champions reclaimed their positions in the jockey standings at Assiniboia Downs this week. One of them was a human, Antonio Whitehall. The other was Mechanic Susie, a horse who had finally recovered from a serious lung infection. Whitehall won four races on Wednesday evening, overcoming interference in the seventh race and overtaking Kerron Khelawan, who had moved into a slim lead after a double the night before.

Mechanic Susie's four wins this season gave her 36 victories, two more than Khelawan. The impressive recovery of Mechanic Susie, who had been given six weeks off due to illness, was a key factor in Whitehall's comeback. Khelawan's double on Tuesday night had moved him into a slim lead over Whitehall, but Whitehall's four victories on Wednesday gave him 36 on the season, surpassing Khelawan.
