Miller Rogen revealed to TheWrap that she has faced the question of having children countless times throughout her life and has never known the answer. During the making of "Babies," her friends moved in with the couple for a year when they were unable to care for their toddler. While this experience was not the sole inspiration for the film, it did contribute to Miller Rogen's perspective.

The movie follows Annie (Kendrick) and Aaron (Rogen) as they take in Eliza (Berlant), a woman who breaks up with her husband and seeks refuge with them. The official TIFF program poses the question: "Will witnessing the joys and sorrows of parenting up close tip the scales one way or another? Will ambivalence reign until Annie and Aaron simply age out?"

Seth Rogen has previously discussed how his choice not to have children allows him more time to work on projects like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," star in two streaming series and run his lifestyle brand, Houseplant. Rogen explained to TheWrap that the year spent with the child was informative, helping the couple realize they could handle having a child, despite their initial doubts.

According to Rogen, the film presents a perspective where the couple is not faced with an annoying or difficult child. Instead, they question whether they could handle the responsibility of parenting and whether it is the right choice for them.
