Israel uses Lebanese civilians as bargaining chips

Israeli troops deployed in southern Lebanon abduct Lebanese civilians and use them as bargaining chips during military operations, according to a report from Middle East Eye. In the village of Halta, a farmer named Saleh witnessed Israeli soldiers searching houses and calling three residents to the street. After being interrogated, the men were taken away by the Israeli army, with one of them, Hatem Abdel-Aal, returning moments later.

During the raid, Israeli soldiers warned residents to stay indoors while firing artillery shells as a warning. Lebanese activist Ali al-Taher compiled a list of 35 Lebanese citizens abducted during the past two wars with Israel, including 12 Hezbollah members and 16 civilians. However, there is no official tally of these abductions.

Israel has released some Lebanese detainees, but progress in negotiations has been slow due to other unresolved issues, such as Israel's failure to withdraw from "pilot zones" established under a framework agreement. US mediation efforts have not yielded significant results, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in control of the Ali al-Taher ridge, a strategic location near southern Lebanon.

The Israeli and Lebanese governments continue to negotiate, but uncertainty remains for residents in the occupied villages.
