Iraq under pressure after local Iran-backed militias accused of attacking Saudi pipeline

Saudi Arabia has suspended a major oil pipeline following an attack by drones originating from Iraq, as tensions escalate in the aftermath of the Iran war. The Ministry of Energy disclosed on Friday that the pipeline, known as the East-West Pipeline, was shut down as a precautionary measure after being targeted. Sources indicate that pump stations adjacent to the pipeline were hit, with one station reportedly showing significant fire damage in a satellite image taken on Friday.

While the identity of the perpetrators and the extent of pipeline damage remain unclear, US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran was likely responsible during a visit to Ireland. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attack, condemning the strikes in the Riyadh and Madinah regions, which caused injuries and damage.

The incident underscores the growing threats to Saudi Arabia's oil resources and export capabilities as the conflict in the region continues. Satellite imagery suggests extensive fire damage at a pumping station near Al Mesba'ah. While the duration of repairs is currently unknown, the Ministry of Energy stated that teams are securing the pipeline and evaluating its safety.

Iraq's government condemned the attacks, vowing to investigate the perpetrators and maintain control over its territory and airspace. Borders in Iraq were closed for precautionary reasons on Saturday. Oil prices hit a record high of over $100 a barrel this week due to the turmoil in the Middle East, though the State Department and the White House have yet to comment on the matter.
