How climate-smart beekeeping is transforming Makueni County

In Makueni County, two young children tragically lost their lives in a house fire that broke out at Mbumbuni Market on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The incident came to light when a tenant spotted smoke wafting from one of the rooms. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that the two children, aged two and four years, had succumbed to the flames.

The children's mother, a casual employee at Kisau Hospital, had left them unattended in the house and locked the door. Discovered by her upon her return, the fire had already claimed the lives of her children. The scene was processed by police, and the bodies were transported to Tawa Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation until autopsy results were available.

Meanwhile, a separate incident unfolded in Kakamega County, where a 20-year-old man was arrested in Khwisero on suspicion of poisoning and killing a two-year-old boy in Emusoto Village. A 23-year-old woman reported that her son experienced severe vomiting after consuming tea prepared by her boyfriend at their residence on Wednesday, September 9.

The child was promptly taken to Khwisero Level 1V Hospital for treatment but tragically passed away while being cared for. Police arrived at the location of the incident in Emusoto Village, Kisa South Location, to probe the events leading to the child's demise. Authorities believe the child may have been poisoned following a dispute between the suspect and the mother regarding the child's paternity.

The man was apprehended and is currently held in police custody while the investigation proceeds. Both the body of the child and the scene were secured for examination, with the child's remains being preserved at Sonak Hospital Mortuary for further autopsy.
