Green Bus Services May Be Suspended on 2 Rawalpindi Routes

The City Traffic Police have requested the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to temporarily halt Green Electric Bus services on two routes in Rawalpindi due to ongoing construction of underpasses on Peshawar Road. Chief Traffic Officer Farhan Aslam informed the RTA secretary about the suspension in a letter, citing the impact of construction on Route No. 1 and Route No. 4.

The two routes in question are those that operate from Saddar Stop to Bhatta Chowk and from Marrir Metro Bus Station to Chowk 26 No., respectively. The construction has forced authorities to divert traffic onto narrower roads, such as from Abid Majeed Turn toward Convoy Road and from the Rafay Mall area toward Chairing Cross and Maryam Hospital.

These roads have limited capacity, and the larger Green Electric Buses could lead to congestion and increase the risk of accidents. The CTO has urged the suspension of the routes until construction is complete to ensure the safety of commuters and prevent potential accidents. This request follows a tragic incident where a nine-year-old girl was killed when a Green Bus collided with her father's motorcycle on Adiala Road, leading to the bus catching fire.

In response to the tragedy, a district school has been closed for two months, and authorities have directed remaining schools to conduct online classes instead. Parents have expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, arguing that major construction work could have been completed during the summer break.
