Ghana undertaking Africa’s largest road infrastructure programme – Agbodza claims

Ghana's Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Agbodza, has claimed that the country is currently undertaking the largest road infrastructure programme in Africa. Major projects are being implemented across the nation under the government's Big Push programme, which represents the most significant investment in road infrastructure the country has ever seen.

Speaking at a citizens' engagement in the Upper West Region, Agbodza stated that poor road conditions were a major concern raised during the 2024 general election campaign. President John Dramani Mahama had promised to significantly increase investment in road infrastructure if elected. Upon taking office, the government found that almost every road in every community was in poor condition.

This issue garnered strong support during the elections, leading President Mahama to commit to unprecedented investment levels. The government is now translating this commitment into numerous road projects across Ghana, all currently underway as part of the Big Push programme. Agbodza described the scale of this investment as unprecedented and emphasized that Ghana is currently the largest road infrastructure programme in Africa.

He stressed that this is the largest ever road infrastructure project seen at any given time in the continent. The Big Push programme is part of the government's broader infrastructure agenda, with a focus on major road projects nationwide. The minister reiterated the government's commitment to prioritising road infrastructure in response to community needs and the election promises made.
