General : Parliament Open Day Platform To Bring Democratic Institution Closer To People - Johari

KUALA LUMPUR, November 20: Malaysia's Parliament Open Day 2026 is underway, aiming to bring the democratic institution closer to the public and provide an opportunity for visitors to witness and comprehend the workings of the House of Democracy. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul explained that the public's curiosity about the institution's role is evident among visitors arriving as early as 7.30am, including international guests.

The two-day event, coinciding with the 67th anniversary of Parliament and National Month, features a range of activities such as exhibitions, sales, sports competitions, pocket talks, film screenings, and stage performances.

Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah, along with his Secretary Muhd Sujairi Abdullah, and Dewan Rakyat Secretary Dr Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin, were present at the opening. Chief Administrator of the Malaysia Parliament, Datuk Dr Ahmad Husaini Abdul Rahman, emphasized that the concept of bringing Parliament closer to the people extends beyond attracting more visitors to the historic building.

It lies in the principle that democratic institutions must remain close to the people, with the public's right to understand how Parliament functions being crucial to the institution's strength.

Visitor Athirah Amalin Ahmad Daud, a 28-year-old civil servant, expressed her excitement about the experience, stating that seeing the institution firsthand after only watching it on television was thrilling. Another visitor, 23-year-old student Amir Haikal Mohd Firdaus, urged for regular events like this to enable more people to learn about Parliament better, as many may never have the chance to step inside.
