GCC to take up infra maintenance works across three regions

Bridges, subways, culverts and footbridges will be improved at a cost of ₹77 lakh; residents have raised concerns about the condition of subways

GCC to take up infra maintenance works across three regions

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched construction and enhancement projects for bridges, subways, culverts, and footbridges across the city, with an estimated total expense of ₹77.07 lakh. These works are set to be carried out in three regions - north, central, and south - within a period of 365 days from the issuance of the work order.

The maintenance of bridges and structural repairs are guaranteed for up to five years, and retention amounts along with performance guarantees are mandatory for the contracts, as per GCC.

The north and central regions, which include Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, and Kodambakkam zones, are expected to incur costs of approximately ₹28.90 lakh each. Meanwhile, the south region comprising Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur zones will see works estimated at ₹19.27 lakh.

These initiatives aim to address the concerns raised by residents on social media regarding the deteriorating conditions of subways. Many highlighted delays in the completion of work on the Ambattur Railway Station subway, which began in 2023, along with encroachments causing difficulty in access. Additionally, residents have also expressed concerns about water stagnation, insufficient lighting, and security issues at subways in Wall Tax Road and in T. Nagar, Chetpet, Perambur, and Meenambakkam.
