Even iPhone Duo Does Not Fix The Biggest Problems With Foldables

Apple's iPhone Duo has entered the foldable phone market, marking its first major new iPhone form factor in 19 years. However, despite its significance, the device still struggles with the same compromises that have plagued book-style foldables. The price remains a significant issue, starting at around $2,000, which is nearly double the cost of a conventional flagship phone.

Despite being less expensive than earlier rumors suggested, $2,000 is still a substantial investment. The Duo may not deliver a tablet-like experience, as foldable displays are larger than regular phone screens but not large enough to replace a tablet. The camera system is another area where the iPhone Duo falls short, lacking a dedicated telephoto lens in favor of an ultra-wide camera that is comparable to the one on the iPhone 18 Pro.

This results in a less comprehensive camera setup for a higher price. Foldables also face challenges with battery life and cooling, as they typically require splitting the battery across both halves of the device, leading to shorter battery life than conventional smartphones. Charging speeds are also slower due to the distributed battery design.

Thermal performance is another concern, as the Duo's thinner frames leave less area for heat dissipation, potentially causing the device to throttle performance under heavy use. Durability is a persistent challenge in the foldable market, with the Duo featuring a hinge and folding display that introduce potential failure points.

While the device has an IP68 rating, foldable cases may not fully protect the hinge and moving parts. The iPhone Duo reintroduces Touch ID, which may be inconvenient for users accustomed to Face ID, as fitting both the outer and inner displays with Face ID hardware would add design complications. The side-mounted fingerprint sensor has a smaller scanning area and may not be as comfortable for all users.

Lastly, the crease running across the inner screen remains a visible reminder of the device's foldable nature, despite Apple's efforts to improve its appearance with a matte nano coating and a flatter, less obtrusive panel.
