England survive scare to seal 3-0 sweep against Pakistan

England fought off a significant setback to claim a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan in the third Test at Edgbaston on Saturday, sealing the win by eight wickets. The home side, aiming for a score of 130, found themselves in a precarious position when openers Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay were bowled by Mohammad Abbas in the first over.

Joe Root, England's leading run-scorer, took a tentative start, edging a ball bowled by Razaullah to the slips but quickly recovered to score rapidly. Root was briefly thwarted when he was caught off Mohammad Ali, but both he and Jordan Cox recovered to reach their half-centuries. England completed the target in the 25th over with Root remaining unbeaten on 62 and Cox 59 not out.

Pakistan's hopes were initially buoyed by debutant fast bowler Razaullah, who played a crucial role in their innings, hitting nine sixes and accumulating 81 runs off 63 balls. The 21-year-old also claimed four wickets in England's first innings. However, his heroics were insufficient to overturn England's dominance, as Pakistan's series fortunes continued to wane.

The tourists had already suffered heavy defeats in the first and second Tests, losing by an innings and 103 runs and 194 runs, respectively. Following their second Test loss, Pakistan withdrew seven players and replaced them with seven new faces, with Razaullah among them. The team's turmoil was compounded by the sacking of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and assistant coach Umar Gul.

The 3-0 series whitewash brought a much-needed morale boost for England, who had recently faced turmoil following their loss to New Zealand and the departures of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. Looking ahead, England will face further challenges, starting with a Test series in South Africa in December and January, followed by the prestigious Ashes series at home next year.
