Economy minister says Malaysia to deepen renewable energy, connectivity ties with Indonesia, Thailand

Malaysia has pledged to enhance regional cooperation in renewable energy and connectivity with Indonesia and Thailand, aiming to boost economic opportunities within the Asean sub-region, stated Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. He emphasized the significance of structured and effective plans, such as the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), in amplifying economic potential.

At the 32nd IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting in Medan, Indonesia, Nasir outlined plans for the 2027-2031 blueprint, following the 2022-2026 Implementation Blueprint. The main focus areas include strengthening the renewable energy sector via the Asean Power Grid and improving physical connectivity among the three nations. He highlighted the importance of sustainability and digital agendas as new growth drivers, along with expanding green economy prospects in the region.

Malaysian officials expressed readiness to host the IMT-GT meeting in Langkawi, Indonesia, in September 2027. The ministers jointly reaffirmed their dedication to the IMT-GT Vision 2036, which seeks to establish an integrated, innovative, inclusive, and sustainable sub-region. They acknowledged the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation as crucial enablers of productivity, innovation, and competitiveness.
