Carney to meet UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham for first time

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet his UK counterpart Andy Burnham for the first time during a three-day European trip beginning on Tuesday. The leaders are set to discuss various issues, including defence and security, energy, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. This meeting marks the first time the two world leaders will physically meet, following Burnham's appointment as the UK's fourth prime minister in just four years.

Prior to Burnham, the UK saw a series of rapid transitions, with former Conservative leaders Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, as well as Labour leader Keir Starmer, struggling to retain their positions. Starmer was ousted by his own party, and a leadership contest within the governing Labour Party ultimately led to Burnham's appointment as the head of 10 Downing Street.

In addition to the meeting, Carney will also address the European Parliament in Strasbourg and attend the State of the European Union address during his European visit. The European Union's ambassador to Canada has mentioned that Carney and EU officials aim to establish a new partnership during his visit. Carney has been actively working on strengthening ties with European nations and other countries as relations with the United States have deteriorated.

Later this week, Canada will impose counter tariffs on billions of dollars worth of U.S. products in retaliation for Canada-US trade talks failing in late August.
