BRICS summit India LIVE: China's Xi heads to New Delhi; high security, traffic curbs in place

Chinese President Xi Jinping is en route from Beijing to New Delhi to participate in the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit. The two-day event, hosted by India, is scheduled to take place on September 12 and 13. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet with Xi during the summit, which is anticipated to be the main highlight.

New Delhi is bracing for the summit with tight security measures. An estimated 30,000 police and security personnel, along with anti-drone systems, are on duty in and around the Bharat Mandapam venue, where the summit will be held. Delhi Police has implemented a multi-layered security plan, with 15,000 personnel and 200 paramilitary units deployed throughout the city.

Advanced surveillance technology, including over 500 CCTV cameras, is being utilized for continuous monitoring of critical areas. Airspace restrictions have been imposed around New Delhi, prohibiting non-scheduled flights from September 11 to 13.

The BRICS leaders are set to begin arriving at Bharat Mandapam on Saturday at 2pm. The first closed session, starting at 2.35pm, will concentrate on "Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism." The summit will continue on Sunday with a session titled "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth." The theme for India's 2026 BRICS presidency, its fourth chairmanship, is "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability."
