BRICS Summit 2026: ‘Middle East War Does Not Serve Common Interests,’ Says Xi Jinping; Calls For Greater Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping asserted at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi that the ongoing war in the Middle East does not serve the "common interests" of the bloc's member countries. The summit, which began on September 12, 2026, is being held amidst the backdrop of the Iran-US and Russia-Ukraine conflicts. Xi's statements highlight the difficulties faced by BRICS nations as they strive to find common ground in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions.

During the summit, Chinese President Xi also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation on artificial intelligence among BRICS countries. He urged the grouping to oppose violations of other nations' sovereignty and interference in their internal affairs. Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning had indicated that Xi would discuss major international issues and ways to deepen cooperation among BRICS members ahead of the summit.

The BRICS summit, hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, is focusing on trade, investment, and global conflicts as the alliance seeks to play a more significant role in shaping the global agenda for emerging and developing countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and leaders from the other eight BRICS members are all present in New Delhi for the event.

The geopolitical divisions tested by the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as rising US-China tensions, are challenging the bloc's ability to find consensus among countries with divergent strategic interests.
