BRICS can help Global South build resilience beyond supply chains: China Daily ahead of Xi-Modi meeting

The 18th BRICS Summit commenced in New Delhi, coinciding with heightened global economic uncertainty stemming from conflicts and geopolitical tensions. In an op-ed from China Daily, authors Lan Qingxin and Pan Juncheng argue that BRICS cooperation can empower Global South nations to transcend mere supply chain management and foster more resilient, self-sufficient economies.

The BRICS framework facilitates diversified trade, mitigates regulatory obstacles, and bolsters supply chain security, collectively enhancing economic resilience among its member countries. This platform amplifies supply chain security, enabling BRICS nations to forge independent pathways to sustainable growth amidst escalating geopolitical challenges.

A key focal point is the escalating reliance on local currencies within BRICS trade, which diminishes vulnerability to currency fluctuations and bolsters economic steadiness. Notably, local currency settlement constitutes over 65% of intra-BRICS transactions, surpassing 99% in the China-Russia trade.

The authors posit that the BRICS grouping is instrumental in enhancing supply chain resilience and propelling development-chain resilience—a concept signifying the ability of underdeveloped economies to not only endure disruptions but also construct robust, autonomous growth trajectories. This is particularly crucial for nations grappling with technological disparities, mounting financial risks, and waning traditional growth engines.

BRICS fosters transport connectivity through cross-border infrastructure development, including maritime routes and transport corridors, as evidenced by the Xiamen-Durban Secure and Smart Trade Line. This maritime shipping and customs pilot route, initiated in August 2025, exemplifies collaborative customs clearance processes between China and South Africa, both BRICS members.

In essence, BRICS positions itself as a pivotal platform for Global South nations, bolstering supply chain security and catalyzing development-chain resilience. By promoting diversified trade, reducing regulatory hurdles, and facilitating logistics integration, BRICS equips Global South economies to navigate disruptions and chart sustainable growth trajectories amidst rising geopolitical volatility.
