Beyond the Oil Barrel, India’s BRICS Presidency Deepens Gulf Ties In Tech and Food Security

India’s BRICS Presidency in 2026 is redefining the nation's relationship with Gulf countries, moving beyond oil to focus on technology, investment, clean energy, and food security, according to a recent report. While energy remains a cornerstone of India-Gulf ties, the 18th BRICS Summit is spotlighting areas of collaboration in emerging strategic sectors.

Clean energy presents a promising avenue, with Gulf investment and expertise in renewable energy complementing India’s engineering prowess, manufacturing prowess, and vast domestic market. Potential collaborations include solar equipment, green hydrogen, battery storage, and low-carbon technologies. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE in May 2026, both nations bolstered cooperation in crude oil, LNG, and LPG, and agreed to augment UAE participation in India’s strategic petroleum reserves and explore strategic gas reserves.

Food security is gaining prominence as an additional pillar of the partnership. India’s agricultural and food-processing expertise could cater to Gulf demand, while investments in storage, logistics, and resilient supply chains could ensure long-term food availability. The inclusion of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the expanded BRICS, along with India’s robust relations with all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, could elevate New Delhi’s role as a bridge between the Gulf and the broader BRICS alliance.

Economic engagement is poised to deepen through an India-GCC free trade agreement, encompassing Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
