BAM eyes special incentive to end Malaysia’s 20-year wait for Asian Games badminton gold

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is contemplating a special incentive for their national players if they secure Malaysia's first Asian Games badminton gold medal in the upcoming Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games. Since 2006, Malaysia has not won an Asian Games badminton title, with the previous victory coming in 2006 when Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong claimed gold in Doha, Qatar.

BAM president Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz admitted that the 20-year wait for a badminton gold medal at the quadrennial Games was an extended period for Malaysian sports enthusiasts. He disclosed that BAM would consider the proposal based on the association's financial capacity and support from sponsors when discussing the incentive.

BAM's sponsors are typically known to provide incentives as well, and the association will discuss this possibility with them. Tengku Zafrul intends to meet the players before their departure for the Asian Games on Monday, urging them to remain focused and give their best for the country. Regarding the appointment of a mixed doubles coach, he stated that no final decision had been made, though a local candidate could potentially fill the position.

BAM is also discussing preparations for the Malaysia SEA Games, with the association committed to selecting the strongest team available at the time, as the National Sports Council (NSC) has set a target of becoming overall champions.
