Backing ideas before they become enterprises

The 15th edition of the ChinniKrishnan Innovation Awards 2026, held in Chennai, celebrated ten promising ideas at the early stage, rather than established startups. The awards, organized by FMCG firm CavinKare and the Madras Management Association (MMA), aim to provide recognition, confidence, and encouragement to early-stage innovators.

C.K.Ranganathan, Chairman & Managing Director of CavinKare, paid tribute to his father Chinni Krishnan, the visionary behind the sachet revolution. He recounted how his father sold his agricultural land to pursue his ambition, attempting 54 distinct business ideas before finding success. Ranganathan emphasized the importance of perseverance, stating that innovators must not give up.

Kamal Bali, President & Managing Director of Volvo Group India, highlighted the significance of identifying a problem and striving to find a solution, stating that merely embarking on this journey is a substantial achievement.

Three firms - Biopioneer, Prantae Solutions, and EF Polymer - were acknowledged in the innovation category. Biopioneer developed an indigenous, thermostable broad-spectrum protease inhibitor to preserve protein biomarkers in blood, serum, and plasma, enhancing diagnostic reliability in rural, hot, and resource-constrained areas.

Prantae Solutions introduced Proflo-U, a portable point-of-care platform to quantify key kidney-health markers with laboratory-aligned performance. EF Polymer, an agri-tech enterprise, sought to address agricultural water scarcity by converting fruit and agricultural waste into a biodegradable water-retention polymer, Fasal Amrit.

The Special Jury Award went to Music Temple Private Limited, which created the Gamaka Box, a patented notation method for representing Indian music's intricate oscillations and curves. This innovation makes these musical nuances more readable, teachable, and documentable, helping preserve India's rich musical heritage. Each Innovation category winner received ₹1 lakh, a trophy, a citation, and access to CavinKare's expertise across various areas.

The Special Jury Award winner received ₹50,000, while the ten Great Ideas winners were each awarded ₹10,000 for their original concepts demonstrating strong thinking and future potential.
