Anthropic CEO outlines plan to ‘pace the frontier’

In a recent blog post, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei echoed the call to "pace the frontier" of AI development, outlining three strategies to do so. He emphasized the need to "slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models" and called for the use of "embedded evaluators" from third-party organizations to verify compliance with pacing and safety commitments.

Anthropic has committed to this approach unilaterally. Additionally, Amodei proposed that leading AI companies within democratic countries should coordinate common safety standards, though he acknowledged potential antitrust concerns and suggested government mediation. Lastly, he urged global collaboration with authoritarian governments to restrict certain dangerous uses of AI, such as biological weapons production.

Despite facing criticism from some AI boosters, Amodei maintains a balanced perspective, emphasizing the importance of building AI responsibly for human benefit.
