Álvarez Stays Put as FIFA Rethinks Extreme Release Clauses

Atlético Madrid has held firm in refusing to let star player Julián Álvarez join Barcelona, prompting FIFA to consider rewriting one of its key transfer regulations. Marca reports that FIFA plans to amend Article 17 of its Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, starting from January 1, 2027. The dispute centers on the hefty $580 million release clause attached to Álvarez, which made the transfer between the two clubs virtually impossible.

This situation has highlighted the need for FIFA to modify its policies to make transfer situations involving such extreme release clauses more equitable. FIFA's proposed changes aim to set release clauses closer to a player's actual market value instead of an inflated figure meant solely to prevent a player from leaving. This shift is in line with discussions happening within Spanish football, including Barcelona's own contract negotiations.

Article 17 currently governs the consequences of terminating a contract without just cause, with the intention of making compensation calculations more objective and proportionate. However, an agreed-upon clause can still be considered and reviewed if deemed excessive. Atlético's stance remained firm throughout the dispute, with Barcelona being the only known potential suitor.

The new rules, according to Marca, are designed to protect players in situations like Álvarez's, preventing clubs from setting unrealistic release clauses while still safeguarding the interests of the selling club. The primary goal is to facilitate smoother departures for players who no longer wish to stay, without entirely removing the recourse for clubs.

Contract stability is anticipated to remain intact, with the intention of ensuring predictability when such disputes arise. The revised Article 17 is set to come into effect on January 1, 2027, thereby applying to the following transfer window, allowing Álvarez to stay at Atlético until then.
