ActionSA takes Pemmy Majodina to Parliament’s Ethics Committee

ActionSA has announced its intention to present a complaint to Parliament's Ethics Committee against Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina. This follows the release of footage showing Majodina allegedly swearing at a resident with a disability in Kouga, Eastern Cape. Malebo Kobe, a member of ActionSA's parliamentary team, expressed concern in a statement, claiming that Majodina's behavior tarnishes the dignity of public office and brings Parliament into disrepute.

The controversy surrounding Majodina has emerged just a week after Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero faced backlash for using profanities during a community meeting. Morero subsequently apologized for his remarks. Political analyst Dr Dale McKinley weighed in on the situation, stating that politicians should be prepared for provocation and frustration in their roles. Despite this, he emphasized that using profanity is a breach of decorum and undermines the credibility of public officials.

McKinley highlighted the sensitivity of the issue, noting that many South Africans find the use of profanity in public discourse deeply troubling. He argued that while disagreement is a part of democratic discourse, employing profanity does not contribute to constructive dialogue and instead tarnishes the reputation of those who resort to such language. He stressed that politicians are expected to maintain a higher standard of conduct and should engage in debates firmly and respectfully, even when their viewpoints differ.
