Zelensky calls for stronger US sanctions against Russia, says Ukraine must engage in peace talks with Moscow

In a Sept. 11 interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the United States to impose stricter sanctions on Russia, emphasizing the importance of decisive actions from President Donald Trump. Zelensky also advocated for the U.S. Congress to pass a Russia sanctions bill introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, after a Sept. 14 meeting was scheduled to discuss the proposed legislation. He praised Graham's commitment to defending American, European, and Ukrainian values.

However, Democratic lawmakers Don Beyer, Gregory Meeks, and Richard Neal criticized the bill, stating it would not mandate sanctions against Russia and would grant Trump additional authority over tariffs. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine must engage in peace talks with Moscow to end Russia's war, suggesting the need for step-by-step progress, including a Black Sea unblock and energy truce.

He stated that Ukraine will respond appropriately to Russian attacks if civilian infrastructure is targeted, warning Russia that any such actions during the upcoming winter would result in reciprocal retaliation.
