Ukraine's agricultural exports increased in September, but still only make up 40% of their full capacity due to Russia's ongoing blockade of Black Sea ports, according to the Agriculture Ministry. In the first month of September, the country exported 630,000 metric tons of agricultural goods, with grain accounting for 380,000 tons.

This is an improvement from August, when the country only managed 33% capacity, but the alternative sea routes can only handle half of the seaport volume. Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi stated that the ministry aims to boost alternative routes, provide financial assistance and temporary storage for farmers, and work towards restoring full Black Sea exports.

The blockade has raised concerns about a potential global food crisis, as farmers struggle to deliver grain to customers in Asia and Africa. Ukraine predicts that the blockade could cost it 10.8 billion euros ($12.6 billion) in lost agricultural exports. The ministry has allocated $12 million for free polymer storage sleeves and is expanding a loan program to support farmers.

The lending program could reach Hr 60 billion ($1.3 billion) by year's end, as Ukrainian farmers need Hr 80 billion ($1.8 billion) for the upcoming autumn sowing season. Ukraine has requested 220 million euros ($255 million) from the EU, but no decision has been made yet. Without adequate support, farmers may plant fewer crops, negatively impacting an industry that made up 60% of Ukraine's exports in the first half of the year.
