Umno grassroots open to closer Pas ties if it benefits the people

Umno grassroots in Melaka are open to closer ties with Pas if it benefits the people, according to Melaka Umno leader Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. The potential cooperation must respect the core principles of both parties, which include the rights of Malays and Bumiputera, the Malay Rulers, and the sovereignty of Islam. Noor Helmy noted that both Umno and Pas have several areas of common ground and need to find a point of convergence for a bigger joint effort.

However, it is too early to predict if this cooperation will lead to a formal political pact before the 16th General Election. The political landscape in Malaysia is highly dynamic, and the most suitable arrangement could vary from state to state. Political cooperation should not be solely viewed through a national lens, considering the differing political strengths and dynamics across states.

While a Pas-led government might be acceptable in states like Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis, and Terengganu, Melaka has its unique political landscape. The focus should be on an arrangement that ensures everyone feels comfortable, not necessarily who becomes the chief minister. Any cooperation should not weaken Umno's ability to stand independently, as political cooperation is a strategy and a bonus. Umno must be prepared to stand on its own feet, even if there is a coalition.
