U.S. no longer seen as honest broker on Russia–Ukraine — CNN

U.S. officials are reportedly eager to have CIA Director John Ratcliffe take over negotiations with Russia and Ukraine in the ongoing war, despite the White House denying such a plan. The Financial Times reported on September 9 that Ratcliffe would assume a larger role in the negotiations, with Steve Witkoff continuing to participate.

Jared Kushner may shift his focus to resolving the conflict in Gaza and the U.S.-Iranian conflict. The White House dismissed the Financial Times report as "totally fake news." While Ratcliffe is considered a stronger negotiator than Witkoff, it is believed that pressure through tougher sanctions and increased military aid to Ukraine is necessary to effect change.

Ratcliffe's potential appointment has been viewed favorably by some in Washington, who see Witkoff's approach as unprofessional. After a recent meeting with Putin, Witkoff made comments about retirement that were deemed inappropriate by an unnamed Washington official. It is currently unclear if Ratcliffe will assume charge of the Russia-Ukraine issue, but Ukraine has been collaborating with the U.S. at all levels, including with the CIA.

Ratcliffe visited Moscow in late August, though the purpose of the trip remains undisclosed. Both U.S. and Russian officials downplayed its significance, describing it as a routine visit within intelligence agency contacts. Western media outlets have provided conflicting accounts of the trip's true purpose.
