Two-time MLB All-Star, Dodgers World Series champion, might retire at 39

Kirby Yates, a two-time MLB All-Star and World Series champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers, might retire at the age of 39. The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to secure a September comeback for Yates, who is currently listed on their injured list due to shoulder pain. In an interview with MLB.com, Yates expressed the importance of being with his family as much as possible, making it a difficult decision.

Yates has had a successful career, compiling a 32-29 record with a 3.36 ERA and 101 saves in 516 major-league games. He has played for eight teams, including the Pirates, Rays, Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, Braves, and Yankees. Yates was a key player in the Dodgers' 2025 World Series victory and has been recognized as an All-Star twice, in 2019 with the Padres and in 2024 with the Rangers.

Following Tommy John surgery at age 34, Yates made a remarkable recovery and went on to pitch for five more seasons. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him prior to the 2021 season, but his career was cut short by Tommy John surgery. Yates recently signed a $5 million contract with the Angels as a free agent and was subsequently traded to Pittsburgh.

Currently, Yates is on the team's injured list and hopes to have another successful season, potentially culminating in another postseason appearance.
