Train derails in northwest France, 44 injured

A train carrying 186 passengers derailed in northwest France on Friday, resulting in 44 injuries, including one that was serious, according to officials. The incident occurred between the Normandy cities of Rouen and Caen, with the train running at around 7.45 pm local time.

Upon derailing, the train experienced several jolts, only intensifying over a period of approximately three seconds. One passenger, Louis, 24, recounted the harrowing experience to ICI Normandie radio, stating that he could no longer remain seated and the windows partially shattered, with stones from the track also entering the carriage. The impact was described as shocking, and the reporter himself remains shaken.

Rouen prosecutor Sebastien Gallois confirmed that 44 people were injured, with one 18-year-old woman being evacuated in critical condition. Drug and alcohol tests conducted on the train driver returned negative results. In response to the incident, a mass-casualty response plan was activated, mobilizing 130 firefighters, five medical teams, and 80 vehicles to assist in the emergency situation.

The French rail network operator, SNCF Reseau, declared that traffic on the line had been suspended and power to the tracks had been cut to facilitate the work of emergency services. Their primary focus is on caring for the injured passengers and restoring safe operating conditions.

Rail authorities and the police are currently investigating the causes of the accident.
