Carlos, thank you for being on Houston We Have a Podcast. To start, could you share a bit about your background and your role at NASA? Carlos García-Galán Certainly, it's an honor to be here with you today.

I've always been captivated by exploration and pushing the boundaries, undertaking feats that no one else has accomplished. This includes pioneering endeavors like the first climbers to Everest or explorers venturing into a pyramid centuries after it was abandoned. These experiences have always inspired me, and space exploration embodies all of these qualities.

It pushes the limits in every aspect, from technology and science to the sheer novelty of discovering new things every time we venture into space, with very few people having gone before. NASA embodies this spirit of exploration, tackling the seemingly impossible. Growing up in Spain, I always harbored a desire to contribute to such endeavors.

When I grew up, NASA was the name that came to mind, and now, with more opportunities available in partnership with NASA worldwide, that dream remains intact. I pursued a course leading me to study space sciences and electrical engineering in Spain, eventually coming to the United States to attend the Florida Institute of Technology.

Right after graduation, I found myself at the very beginning of assembling the International Space Station, where I began my career as an ISS flight controller. It's been quite a journey, but it reflects the dedication required to fulfill one's dreams. Nilufar Ramji That's truly inspiring. As you've been entrusted with an enormous responsibility, could you elaborate on the recent "Ignition" initiative?

What sparked this transformation within NASA? Carlos García-Galán Ignition, I believe, was a turning point, a transformation for NASA. It marked a shift away from spreading efforts too thin across multiple initiatives, towards focusing on key objectives that exemplify what the agency should strive for. These initiatives include accelerating our return to the Moon, establishing a permanent presence on the lunar surface through the construction of a Moon Base, maintaining a permanent presence in low Earth orbit following the retirement of the space station, venturing to Mars and the technologies required to achieve that goal, such as nuclear propulsion, and continuing to conduct scientific research that no other nation can accomplish.

Ignition was about realigning NASA to focus on these pivotal objectives, encompassing all aspects of space exploration to achieve what no other entity can.
