‘The Daily Show’ Roasts Trump’s $5,000 Midterm Election Bribe as ‘2 Trips to the Grocery Store’

Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" took aim at President Trump's proposal of a $5,000 check to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress in the midterm elections. Host Michael Kosta quipped, "$5,000?!? That's two trips to the grocery store!" He further expressed disbelief at the idea, stating, "We're less than two months away from the midterms, which means you've got just under 60 days to find out who your representative is and what Congress does."

The segment featured a montage of news reports showing a majority of Americans disapproving of Trump's performance since taking office. Kosta mocked the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, criticizing first-time candidate Ken Paxton as "awful" and a "charisma black hole." Despite this, Kosta claimed Trump's true "secret weapon" is his "bribe" promise.

During his speech, Trump announced the $5,000 check promise, to which Kosta sarcastically remarked, "Holy s—t! $5,000?!? That's two trips to the grocery store! Or one, if you buy raspberries." The host also mocked Trump's decision to call the bribe a "dividend," noting that the U.S. is already in negative $40 trillion of debt. Kosta described the behavior as "exhausting, poisonous, and it makes you question the very health of our democracy."
