Sudan: 16 Cholera Deaths Reported in West Kordofan, Darfur Vaccination Drive Begins

In West Kordofan, Sudan, 16 cholera-related deaths and about 70 cases have been reported in villages within the El Adiya locality. The vaccination campaign has commenced in Tawila, North Darfur, as medical sources reported the first cases emerging on August 30 and swiftly spreading to neighboring villages. Dr. Alaa Nugud, health minister in the Sudan Founding Alliance administration, confirmed the outbreak, noting that health authorities have recorded 104 cases and 10 deaths since the start of September in El Adiya.

The health teams are actively responding to the affected areas and collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to supply medical resources and vaccines. This campaign aims to vaccinate 675,315 individuals in En Nuhoud, El Fula, and Wad Banda. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also announced a 10-day cholera vaccination drive in Tawila, North Darfur, intending to immunize at least 95,000 people with WHO assistance.

The cholera outbreak, initially announced in June, has affected approximately 2,900 people across six Sudanese states, resulting in 247 deaths. Dr. Nugud warned that ongoing conflict and limited resources continue to pose challenges in managing new outbreaks. Nevertheless, authorities pledge to maintain surveillance and coordinate with international health organizations to combat the crisis.
