Strengthen social protection for vulnerable — Minister

Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, emphasized during a community dialogue in Accra that social protection is a vital component of national development. She firmly stated that no individual or family should be left without support due to poverty or vulnerability. At the forum, she explained that these discussions not only informed citizens about existing social protection programs but also allowed them to contribute ideas on how the system could be enhanced.

The Minister highlighted that the government's dedication to expanding social protection was solidified by the passage of the Social Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1148) and the Social Protection Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2521). These legislative measures established a comprehensive legal framework for providing social protection services in Ghana, aiming to foster a more inclusive and resilient system.

She also pointed out that such community engagements had already been conducted in five metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies across the country, encouraging stakeholders and citizens to collaborate in making social protection services more accessible and responsive. Assembly Member Saint Kabu of the Teshie Okesekor Electoral Area in the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly shared that his assembly had implemented measures to tackle drug and substance abuse and support rape victims, offering assistance and funds to those in need.
