Stellantis signs MOU on Brampton, Ont., plant as talks with union break down

Automaker Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armored vehicle maker Roshel regarding a potential sale of its idled Brampton, Ontario assembly plant. The union representing Canadian workers at Stellantis, Unifor, has paused contract talks with the company, citing an impasse over the plant's future. Trevor Longley, chairman, president, and CEO of Stellantis Canada, believes Roshel represents a strong path to restoring sustainable operations at the Brampton assembly plant, preserving its strategic role in Canada's advanced manufacturing sector.

Unifor has declared it will provide further details on its next steps, with the current collective agreement set to expire on September 20th. The union's spokesperson, Kathleen O'Keefe, emphasized that the proposed facility closure and sale threaten the wages, pensions, and benefits of Unifor members, as well as the economic activity and high-quality union jobs associated with the automotive industry in Ontario and the Brampton community.
