#SHOWBIZ: Finas, Jakim agree on measures to strengthen film and TV content guidelines

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) have reached an agreement on steps to enhance oversight and accountability within Malaysia's film and television sector. During a recent meeting, both organizations decided that the drama series Madu Atau Racun and Cela will advance to a subsequent phase, where a panel from Jakim will assess the productions based on their overall narratives and content context, adhering to applicable guidelines.

Furthermore, Jakim and Finas, along with other relevant bodies, plan to hold discussions with individuals involved in the film and television industry to explore production practices and guidelines for creating content. Additionally, Finas will implement an extra stipulation on the Filming Certificate (SSP) to guarantee that all productions comply with established standards and do not feature content that could negatively impact society.

Jakim emphasized that these measures are not intended to curtail artistic expression but are instead a means to ensure creative development is responsible, taking into account religious sensitivities, cultural values, public interests, and Malaysia's legal framework. Jakim's director-general, Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, stated that the department regards media content seriously due to its influence in disseminating messages and shaping societal values, especially concerning matters related to religion, morality, and the sensitivities of the Muslim community.

He encouraged creators, producers, and industry professionals to refer to the Guidelines for Screening Islamic Elements in Broadcast Materials when crafting works involving religion and Islamic values. The Communications Ministry's efforts, through Finas, to strengthen procedures and adherence to film and television content guidelines were also acknowledged by Jakim.

Dr Suhaimee reiterated that Jakim remains dedicated to collaborating with Finas and other relevant entities through engagement sessions and interactions with industry professionals to enhance comprehension of the guidelines and ensure content respects religious values and societal interests.
