Sam Altman Floats Industrywide Pause as Frontier AI Safety Concerns Grow

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has suggested a possible slowdown in the development of advanced artificial intelligence during a company-wide meeting, as reported by Bloomberg. The potential pause comes amid growing safety concerns in the AI industry. Altman expressed hope that other AI labs would join OpenAI in the slowdown, although not all may comply, according to the report.

In September, OpenAI delayed the development and launch of its Astra model, citing a need to strengthen and test safeguards against "cyber misuse and unauthorized model actions." The company announced that Astra had reached its "Critical" cybersecurity threshold, meaning it could identify and exploit previously unknown security flaws in well-protected systems without human intervention.

Earlier, OpenAI had paused internal activities related to Astra due to security concerns on August 7. In June, Anthropic, another AI company, proposed that frontier AI developers should slow or pause their efforts to allow societal structures and alignment research to catch up with the rapid advancements. Anthropic's proposal was motivated by the increasing delegation of AI development to AI systems and the potential risk of an AI system fully autonomously designing and developing another AI system.

In July, a statement signed by 1,132 employees of frontier AI companies called for the U.S. government to support an international effort to "deliberately pace" the frontier of automated AI development. The number of signers has since risen to 1,386.
