Putin's Aircraft ‘Flying Kremlin’ Sparks Internet Buzz As He Arrives For BRICS Summit In New Delhi; All You Need To Know

Russian President Vladimir Putin touched down at Palam Air Force Base in New Delhi on Friday, arriving in the early hours aboard a specially modified Ilyushin IL-96-300PU aircraft, colloquially known as the “Flying Kremlin.” This marked the commencement of his three-day visit to India, during which he will participate in the BRICS Summit and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The presidential plane immediately garnered attention due to the extensive security measures surrounding its arrival. Two identical IL-96 aircraft were reportedly utilized for the Russian presidential flight operation, making it challenging to ascertain which specific aircraft was transporting Putin. The IL-96-300PU is notably distinct from a regular passenger aircraft.

Constructed on Russia’s long-range IL-96 platform, the presidential variant has undergone significant modifications to serve as a secure airborne command center. Operated by Russia’s Special Flight Squadron, which is tasked with transporting the nation's highest-ranking officials, the aircraft is powered by four Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines.

With a range of approximately 11,000 kilometers, the IL-96 platform is well-suited for extensive international missions. Measuring around 55.35 meters in length and boasting a wingspan of approximately 60.12 meters, this aircraft is one of the most recognizable symbols of Russian presidential travel. The interior of Putin’s aircraft is a blend of luxury and security.

It houses a private presidential suite, along with bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, dining areas, and a conference room for official meetings. The aircraft features rich wood finishes, leather upholstery, and gold-colored embellishments, combining opulence with stringent security measures.
