Princess Astrid of Norway dies at 94 two days after her brother King Harald’s funeral

Princess Astrid Maud Ingeborg of Norway passed away at the age of 94 on September 11, 2024, two days after the funeral of her late brother, King Harald V. The Norwegian Royal Palace announced her death, with King Haakon VIII expressing sorrow upon learning of her passing. Born on February 12, 1932, Astrid was the second daughter of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha.

She took on a more prominent public role following her mother's death in April 1954, becoming Norway's First Lady at the age of 22. Throughout her long life, Astrid represented the Royal House with warmth and dedication, supporting various charitable causes and organizations. She married Johan Martin Ferner in 1961 and had five children.

Astrid's public duties lessened after her marriage, but she remained an active member of the Royal Family through her patronages. She attended King Harald's funeral on September 9, 2024, marking her final public appearance. King Harald V had reigned since 1991, passing away on August 28, 2024, at the age of 89. His son, King Haakon VIII, succeeded him.
