PM: MA63 must be made a national narrative

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wants to transform discussions on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) into a national narrative, according to a recent press conference. Anwar noted that current MA63 talks remain sectoral and are held annually between the federal government and both Sabah and Sarawak. He emphasized that making MA63 discussions a national policy would ensure that matters concerning the interests of Sabah and Sarawak are viewed as national commitments rather than special considerations for the two states.

Anwar stressed the importance of turning MA63 discussions into a national narrative because otherwise, it remains an issue requiring special yearly talks. He further emphasized that this commitment should be made clear to all Malaysians, rather than people speaking solely about their own race, party, or group. He also highlighted the need for Malaysians to engage in a discourse that brings integrity and strength to the nation.

Anwar also addressed Sabah's claim to 40 percent of net revenue, stating that negotiations will continue while considering the financial position as per the original agreement. He mentioned that he had previously agreed to increase the special grant to RM1.5 billion as an interim measure, with the funds to be disbursed in October or November.

The negotiations are ongoing, and the final decision will depend on the parliamentary budget in October, likely leading to the disbursement of the RM1.5 billion amount by late October or early November.
