Plateau schools reopen September 14 after diphtheria scare

The Plateau State Government has announced that schools across the region will reopen on Monday, September 14, 2026, marking the start of the 2026/27 academic session. This decision comes after a temporary closure implemented last Saturday in response to confirmed cases of diphtheria suspected in several areas. The directive, issued through a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of pupils, students, teachers, and school communities. Following the implementation of precautionary and public health measures, the reopening is set to begin on September 14, aligning with the administration's efforts to ensure continuity in the education sector.

The temporary closure, effective from September 7, 2026, served a preventive purpose, allowing health authorities to assess the situation and bolster surveillance and response mechanisms. School authorities are directed to uphold basic hygiene and precautionary measures, maintaining a clean and hygienic environment. Additionally, teachers and school management are encouraged to remain vigilant for symptoms indicative of diphtheria, promptly reporting any concerns to the appropriate health authorities.
