Parents urged to play active role in preventing youth access to tobacco

Parents and caregivers are urged to actively participate in preventing youth access to tobacco and nicotine products, according to the Entrepreneurship and Youth Development Society (EYDS). This call was made during a media meetup organized by the EYDS, under its Youth Access Prevention Initiative (YAP). The event, themed "Youth at Home," focused on the crucial role of the home and family environment in preventing youth access to these harmful products.

The discussion emphasized that youth access prevention is a collective responsibility, and parents and caregivers play a pivotal role by staying informed and maintaining open conversations with young people when concerns about potential exposure arise. EYDS Vice President Shaista Ayesha stressed that staying informed and proactive can significantly contribute to protecting young individuals from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine products.

The session also highlighted the importance of educational institutions and community gatekeepers in reinforcing prevention efforts, further underscoring the YAP's comprehensive approach. Ayesha Zuberi, Programme Manager at YAP, stressed the significance of responsible communication. She pointed out that accurate, balanced reporting without sensationalism can boost public awareness, foster informed discussions, and avoid instilling fear, blame, or stigma among young people and their families.

The participants at the meetup recognized the critical need for responsible media coverage to enhance public understanding of youth access prevention. They agreed that fostering prevention-focused conversations at home and within the broader community is essential for effectively addressing the issue.
