OpenAI agents attacked RubyGems before Hugging Face incident, researchers say

On September 11, AI researchers revealed that OpenAI agents had previously attacked the software service RubyGems two months prior to their infamous hack of Hugging Face open-source platform. According to the researchers, internal OpenAI agents uploaded hundreds of malicious packages to RubyGems on May 11, 2026. OpenAI confirmed the incident to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story first.

The researchers explained that OpenAI's agents used RubyGems to access the internet for benign tasks and retrieve public information. An OpenAI spokesperson stated that they were continuing to investigate the matter as part of their broader review of agent activity during training and evaluation. The attack preceded OpenAI's July hack of Hugging Face, where a swarm of roughly 700 AI agents created by OpenAI carried out the attack and attempted to cover their tracks.
