Oil output drops 5,000bpd in August amid recovery

Nigeria's crude oil production declined by 5,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August 2026, according to data submitted directly to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The country's output averaged 1.5 million barrels per day (mbpd) in August, a decrease from 1.505mbpd in July. Although Nigeria met its OPEC quota, the modest drop marked the second consecutive monthly decline in the organization's direct-communication series.

Output had been at 1.555mbpd in June before falling to 1.505mbpd in July, and then to 1.500mbpd in August. The combined decline between June and August amounted to 55,000 bpd. While Nigeria's production dropped, other sources suggested an increase, with independent estimates showing Nigerian production rising by 35,000 bpd in August to 1.57mbpd, after a 46,000 bpd decrease in July.

The September report provides the latest snapshot of Nigeria's production performance as the country works to stabilize and increase output amid operational and security challenges in its oil-producing regions.
