Nyeri gets major health infrastructure boost as Mwai Kibaki Hospital expands

Construction on the Mwai Kibaki Clinical Annex at Nyeri County's Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital is well underway, currently standing at around 30% completion. This expansion, initiated in April 2026, is projected to be finished within one year and will substantially enhance the hospital's capacity to deliver specialized healthcare services to patients from Nyeri and the surrounding areas.

The 1,178-square-meter facility encompasses a four-story structure and a basement, with provisions for specialized clinics, a laboratory, and a blood unit. As Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital continues to witness high patient volumes, averaging over 5,000 patients per month, this expansion aims to alleviate pressure on existing facilities and improve access to specialized medical services for residents of Othaya, Nyeri County, and neighboring counties.

President William Ruto, during the Kenya Health Summit in August, reiterated the government's commitment to advancing healthcare and ensuring services reach all Kenyans, emphasizing it as a national pledge and moral obligation. "Universal Health Coverage is one such promise," he stated, acknowledging the nation's duty to uphold it.

The hospital's development also signifies ongoing efforts to bolster specialized healthcare services and diagnostic capabilities. Othaya Member of Parliament Wambugu Wainaina noted that the hospital previously lacked access to vital diagnostic equipment, compelling some patients to travel to Nairobi for services like CT scans. This situation has improved with the acquisition of additional equipment and the expansion of specialized services, including MRI and CT scan services, dialysis, and echocardiography.

The clinical annex will complement these investments by offering extra space for patients and medical services.

Sergeant Charity Wanja of the Ministry of Defence explained that the expansion was a strategic move to augment the capacity of Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital, a Level 6 facility. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) team has been tasked with overseeing the project's implementation, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery. With the project ahead of schedule, its completion will be a significant milestone in transforming healthcare in the region.

The enhanced bed capacity, combined with expanded specialist clinics, laboratory, and blood services, is anticipated to improve patient management and reduce the necessity for residents to seek specialized treatment outside the region. For Othaya and the wider Nyeri community, this development represents a substantial investment in accessible, specialized, and higher-level healthcare closer to home.
